Programme Structure

Start Date: 26 January 2026
Duration: 12 Months (4 Semesters)
Assessments: Examinations will be conducted at the end of each semester, covering the modules completed during that term.
Breaks: Training breaks are aligned with the South African school holiday calendar.
All rosters will be provided during induction week.

Class Schedule
Learners follow a roster system based on their chosen trade.
Depending on the trade, classes will either begin in the early morning or late morning.
Timetables are rotational and may fluctuate to accommodate practical training requirements and trade-specific needs.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

- x 1 certified ID copy,
(Foreign nationals: x1 certified passport copy, x1 certified residential visa copy, x1 certified copy of student/work permit)
- School certificate, x 1 certified copy thereof, (minimum Grade 9)
- Completed OTT registration form

INTRODUCTION purpose:

A Mechanical Fitter is responsible for fitting and assembling parts made from metal and other materials to make production machinery.
He lays out, positions and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, welds components using electricity or gas and installs or repairs equipment such as lead pipes, valves, floors and tank linings.
They work from detailed drawings using hand and machine tools. Precise measuring is necessary. Their working environment can be very noisy, dirty or dangerous.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 

1. The ability to apply hand skills to fabricate mechanical components using engineering tools.2. The ability to perform engineering maintenance on mechanical components, subassemblies and machines.3. The ability to repair, install and commission subassemblies and machines. 
Critical Cross-Field Outcomes: 
Candidate will have gained wide field practical training, in order to guide field experience to be gained.
The critical cross-field outcomes are supported by the exit level outcomes as follows:
- Tools and equipment are selected, used and cared for according to accepted standards.
- Safe work procedures, precautions and personal protective equipment required is described and adhered to.
- Fabrication techniques and consequences if not adhered to can be explained for specific applications.Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
- Safe work procedures, precautions and personal protective equipment required is described and adhered to.
- Original equipment manufacturer specifications can be read and used for maintenance and quality specifications of subassemblies and machines.
- Components and machines are monitored and maintained at optimal working condition.
- Routine maintenance on components and machines is performed to manufacturer specifications.
- Mechanical sub-assemblies are dissembled, cleaned and inspected for mechanical soundness.
- Components are replaced and mechanical sub-assemblies and machines are assembled.
- Maintenance planning and communication processes are maintained.Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
- Safe work procedures, precautions and Personal Protective Equipment required for engineering maintenance tasks can be described.
- Original Equipment Manufacturer specifications can be read and used for repairs and quality specifications of subassemblies and machines.
- Fault finding on mechanical sub-assemblies and machines are performed to manufacturer specifications.
- Mechanical sub-assemblies and machines are repaired to manufacturer specifications.
- Mechanical sub-assemblies and machines are installed and commissioned.
- Mechanical sub-assemblies and machines are overhauled to manufacturer specifications.

 TIME PERIOD 

This Program can be presented over a period of minimum 3 years, whereby theory training will be completed over 12 months of the 36 months.
The course covers 12 months at the institution which is made up of Fundamental units covering numeracy and literacy, as well as core and elective modules that are selected to meet the minimum required to achieve the qualification.
Learners will complete formative assessments which will be recorded in their POE’s Learners are then required to complete exposure at the worksite gaining valuable practical training against the modules completed for 24 months of the 36 months. The candidate is responsible for practical work placement.
